Mother of God. I am so very grateful I did not grow up with the Interwebs eating my brain or changing my sexual expectations. Deeply discomfiting to note that although in "the West," underage marriages, medieval-style, are seen as passé and downright creepy, the urge of adult men to have sex upon underage girls (and/or boys) has slithered into the online pornography world. Is there something inherently fucked in the psyche of men? Is it nature? Nurture (patriarchy strikes again)? Both?
OMG, thank you for your insights and advocacy. I would suggest we don't need better porn but NO porn. It is really good for nothing in our patriarchal, misogynist, post-capitalist society, in my opinion, where it is basically an expression of women hatred. I'm a big fan of Andrea Dworkin as well. I agree with you, we have no idea the awful effects it has on children (actually, we do, you / we are a case in point). I wasn't exposed as a kid like you but as an adult and it was STILL very traumatic. The child abuse which is allowed on websites is beyond the pale - I really don't know if I can read the book actually. I appreciate your podcast as well - just discovered it. II am sharing your Substack with folks who wonder "what can we do" regarding fighting the ubiquity of porn. Yes it's "protected by the Constitution" but so are guns and both are killing us. It's the least we can do for our children.
